One year ago, one of the Montessori School of Lake Forest’s Primary classes, lead by Montessori trained teacher Monica Pearson (Lake Bluff), crafted a Great Horned Owl’s nest out of natural materials. Ms. Pearson’s 3, 4, and 5 year-old-students created the nest as their class contribution to MSLF’s Big Possibilities Benefit 2009. MSLF parent Jill London (Lake Forest), who works for Lake Forest Open Lands Association, visited the class to teach them about Great Horned Owls, which are native to this area of Illinois, and help them to build the nest. The students learned that since Great Horned Owls are “recyclers” they will move in to empty nests. The class constructed the nest by weaving grapevines together and sewing a lining made of natural fiber into the nest, as well as placing leaves in it to make a soft bed for baby owls. Once the nest was completed, the entire class and all their families watched an arborist from Care of Trees (Lake Forest) place the nest in a tree at the Lockhart Family Nature Center on Open Lands property in Lake Forest. One year later, this great experience of learning about owls and nature and conservation expanded to fulfill the children’s dreams: currently, a mother Great Horned Owl is nesting in the children’s nest, caring for two owlets.

Summer Camp Montessori Style!

Our Summer Splash plans are shaping up nicely, and we are excited to again offer swimming two days per week for both the Primary and Elementary programs. Swimmers are bused to Riverside Pool in Libertyville. PRY3 teacher Debbie Secler, who is Red Cross certified teaches our swim classes. This year she will be assisted by Jamie Robinson (PRY3 classroom assistant) for all ages, and by Mari Pavelich (MSLF alum) for Primary, as well as by the classroom teachers and assistants. We are all looking forward to a sunny, wet good time!!!

Session 1: America the Beautiful
June 21 – July 2, 2010

Session 1 of Summer Splash will focus on the United States and its history. The children will have an opportunity to look at the history of our country from its beginning in the 13 colonies.

Children will also have the opportunity to learn about our country’s currency and coins.

The session will culminate in our annual 4th of July celebration held at our main campus. This celebration includes a parade around our campus, singing patriotic songs, and summer treats.

Children will have the opportunity to make tie-dye T-shirts (in red, white, and blue, of course) to wear in the parade.

Children will learn the answers to such questions as:

Why is our flag red, white, and blue? Why does it have stars and stripes?

Who are the people/and places depicted on our currency and coins? What can we learn about our country by looking at them? Why do we celebrate the 4th of July?

Session 2: For the Love of Nature
July 5 – July 16, 2010
Session 2 of Summer Splash will follow the theme “For the Love of Nature.” During these two weeks, children will have many different kinds of opportunities to learn about the animals and plants native to northeastern Illinois, especially those in the wetland savannah that borders our property. Summer Splashers will be hiking, wading, observing, sketching, collecting specimens, and studying various guide books during Session 2. Splashers of all ages will also be gardening in their individual classroom gardens as well as tending the big school garden down by the Elementary classrooms.

Session 3: Budding Artist
July 19 – July 30, 2010
Session 3 of Summer Splash showcases “The Budding Artist.” Primary students will experiment with different art media and use their new skills to create works of art that are nature based. They will learn how to make their own paint from egg yolks and vegetables, just like the Old Masters did. Elementary students will work together to create Maria Montessori inspired art works to be used school-wide (and beyond!) on MSLF stickers and buttons. They will learn the art of printmaking as part of this project. Lake Forest Day falls during this session, so Summer Splashers will help design and build the annual MSLF float for the Lake Forest Day Parade. And they’ll proudly march alongside their float on Parade Day!

Session 4: Young Scientist
June 21st – July 2 2010
Session 4 will be devoted to the budding scientist that resides within each child. With MSLF’s wonderful outdoor environment and well stocked classrooms as their laboratories, children will have many opportunities to create and conduct their own experiments. Experiments will range from observing properties of gravity and buoyancy in sink and float activities, to exploring the potentials inherent in the classic vinegar/baking soda reaction. Young scientists will surely be drawn to investigate the properties of matter and the nature and effect of water, as well as to observe and document the activities of our bounteous flora and fauna. Session 4 will kick off with an unscientific by highly exciting event, the Lake Forest Day Parade, when MSLF children and parents march alongside our very own child-designed and decorated float (built during Session 3).
