Upper Elementary Students Skype with Scientist in Antarctica
Jan 29, 2015

upperelscienceMSLF students receive ongoing STEM education through various mediums.  Recently via Skype, the Upper Elementary class had an opportunity to talk with a scientist conducting research in Antarctica.

Scientist Yamini Bala is a member of the Velvet Ice Team and a certified IL high school teacher.  For six weeks over the winter, this all-women team is studying melting and freezing patterns of ice in the West Antarctic Ice Sheet, the fastest-melting and least stable part of Antarctica.  Through their research, Bala and her team are looking for patterns to analyze causes and effects of climate change.

Through a one hour Skype chat with the students, Bala shared a slide show which explained her mission and an overview on climate change.  Students enjoyed receiving access to Bala’s blog and continue to check for updates on her team’s progress both inside and outside of school time.
