Montessori Trained Toddler Director/Directress (ages 15m – 3yrs)

The Montessori School of Lake Forest is seeking a Montessori trained Toddler Director/Directress (ages 15 months – 3 years) for the 2019-2020 school year.

Following Montessori principles, and in keeping with the values of the school, the Director/Directress leads the children’s activities, academically and spiritually, as they relate to the development of “the whole child” (the self, emotional, physical, intellectual) in the prepared Montessori environment. The Director/Directress challenges each child to reach their full potential in these developmental areas, in accordance with Montessori philosophy, policies and procedures.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Applies professional knowledge of child development principles to interpret Montessori philosophy in a manner that assures each child’s optimal development.
  • Assists in developing and implementing curriculum plans and activities that are supportive of the age group of the children in the class.
  • Communicates and cooperates with the Executive Director on program changes.
  • Ensures that the program fosters the intellectual, physical, social, emotional, and moral/ethical growth of all children enrolled.
  • Protects the privacy and working atmosphere of the children.
  • Notifies the Executive Director of personal difficulties with children, parents or staff.
  • Assists in determining requirements for program equipment and materials.
  • Ensures furnishings and materials are complete and correspond to the needs of the class.
  • Responsible for the care and maintenance of classroom materials, including guiding the Assistant and the children to share in this responsibility.
  • Maintains inventory of all furnishings and materials.
  • Assists in establishing the criteria for selection of Assistant and in interviewing Assistant for their own classroom.
  • Supervises Assistant as they work with children, and insures Assistant’s participation in curriculum implementation.
  • Works with Assistant on a daily basis to ensure practical application of Montessori policies and procedures, is available to provide guidance and direction as required.
  • Establishes a regular meeting time to give Assistant opportunity to share questions and observations.
  • Maintains up-to-date academic records and attendance records.
  • Holds two Parent Teacher conferences each year to discuss each child’s progress and maintains ongoing documented communication with parents regarding their child’s specific needs.
  • Submits academic, attendance, and all other records and documentation as requested by the Executive Director.
  • Is responsible, with Assistant’s help, for the safety and physical well-being of the children at all times.
  • Reports any and all accidents immediately and per school protocol, prepares a written accident report if serving as the primary adult involved.
  • Notifies Executive Director immediately of any safety hazards.
  • Trains and supervises Assistant and children in the execution of safety drills.
  • Ensures that safety routines, including daily progress to and from recess or carpool, are clearly established and that the building can be exited in a safe, orderly, and swift manner.
  • Attends staff meetings and in-service programs as scheduled.
  • Attends committee meetings and special meetings requested by the Executive Director.
  • Responsible for participating in the development and implementation of parent information sessions.
  • Conducts class meetings for parents when appropriate.
  • Prepares and distributes class newsletters on a schedule approved by the Executive Director.
  • Assists with any other projects, programs and planning as assigned by Executive Director.

Qualifications include:

  • Montessori Teaching AMI or AMS Certificate for the division level being taught
  • Bachelor’s Degree
  • Prior experience working with children
  • Good communication skills and strong work ethic
  • Investment in continuous learning and development
  • Ability to collaborate, multi-task and learn through observation and modeling
