Blue House Overnight
Sep 13, 2013

On September 5th the Adolescent Program held its first ever overnight. The overall experience was gratifying. On Thursday afternoon the Blue House and Learning Farm were humming with activities. Apples from our backyard were pressed into cider which was enjoyed at dinner and breakfast. Honey, for use all year, was extracted from our hives. The chickens had a temporary pen built next to the house, where they enjoyed fresh greens, that we consider unwanted weeds. (A win-win situation!) Potatoes, green beans, yellow peppers, swiss chard, brocolli and onions were harvested for dinner and breakfast. Wood was split for the dinner’s cook fire. Kindling was gathered, a fire pit built.

After much hard work and a satisfying dinner, we were gathered around the bonfire and enjoyed a discussion of energy transfer and a bonfire song. We were surprised and interupted by an uninvited great horned owl who landed for a spell in the tree canopy in the back yard!

The students worked beautifully together. Having so few bathrooms with so many people was frustrating, yet despite the long waits we all managed to take care of our needs.

On behalf of the whole MSLF Adolescent Faculty, thank you for sharing your precious family time with the school.

Age 6 and age 12 in Montessori are referred to as the capstone years. During these years children really dive into big work and develop their self-confidence.
